3M Mini Hackathon − Digital Education 2023: Strengthens Data Analytics and STEM Learning Across Schools

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 2023
3M Malaysia, in collaboration with Creative Minds Education, successfully delivered the 3M Mini Hackathon, Digital Education 2023, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at enhancing students’ exposure to data analytics, scientific experimentation, and applied STEM learning.
3M is a global science and innovation company known for applying science to improve lives, with operations spanning industries such as healthcare, safety, transportation, and electronics. Through its community initiatives, 3M remains committed to advancing education and empowering future generations with relevant skills.
The programme was implemented across nine secondary schools: SMK Dato Ahmad Razali, SMK Dengkil, SMK Perimbun, SMK Jalan Empat, SMK Subang Bestari (SUBEST), SMK Saujana Impian, SMK Dusun Nanding, SMK Sierramas, and SMK Bandar Baru Bangi. It was officially launched at SMK Dengkil as part of 3M’s Global Giving initiatives, in collaboration with non-governmental organisations and education partners.
Designed as a hands-on learning experience, the programme introduced students to data analytics through the use of PocketLab devices, enabling real-time data collection and analysis. Students participated in structured training sessions supported by the provision of learning equipment and materials.
A key highlight of the programme was the Mini Hackathon challenge, where students conducted experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of different crash cushion designs. The competition component encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving, with students demonstrating their ability to apply data analytics in real-world scenarios. The activity integrated basic physics concepts with data-driven analysis, allowing students to explore scientific principles in a practical and engaging manner.
Feedback from participating schools indicated strong engagement and positive learning outcomes, particularly in bridging theoretical knowledge with hands-on application. Through the 3M Mini Hackathon Digital Education 2023, 3M Malaysia and Creative Minds Education reaffirm their commitment to supporting STEM education and nurturing future-ready talent. The programme reflects a shared vision of equipping students with essential skills in data literacy, innovation, and scientific inquiry in line with evolving industry demands.
